Title: Building A Subwoofer Box
dirty altezza - June 8, 2006 09:36 AM (GMT)
I wanna find out more about building and porting my sub boxes.. At the moment both cerwin 10s and the 15 do not sound as good as I think they could. Does anyone have any info or ideas. Cheers..

with a DIY sub box to be built correctly can be a bit tricky, you have to find out how big the box has to be according to the specs of the woofer, with porting that can be even more trickier as you have to calculate where to port and how long the port tube extends for, it would be wise to get it professionally done.
if you do decide to build it your self make sure you use screws not nails, and seal every joint with sealent

All is good, but they get a kinda luffing sound from the ports.. amps are only at half gain and would really like to rinse the lot..Not too sure to go for a larger box or larger port.

Well here is a design from Jase (i think...cant remember) for a box for a 12"

And it will turn out like this :P (before carpeting) [[note its not my car, i just stuck with a premade sealed box]]
Why dont you just stick to a sealed pre-made box? I once came across a site that helped determain what demensions were needed for the right volume required. You need to follow the manufactures recommended volume for best results.

there are many ways to build a box but the basic way is to find the right spec for the subs. Depending on the spec, build the box smaller than the spec and you won't get the right resonance - get punchy and loose some depth. Build a box bigger than the spec and get a deeper sound but loose the punchiness. Got a good mate that help me build my box before but he is in UK now. He is a great help with box building and has a software that calculated the right cubic inch for the box.
BTW, will it be sealed, ported or bandpass? What woofer brand and model?
Sealed the smallest cubic inch
Ported the middle
Bandpass the biggest and deepest.

Yes Nick, thats mine.
I built mine to be within the allowable 10% of the recommended volume for my sub.
If you have all the tools and materials readily available, then go for it and build one for yourself. Volume and that arn't that hard to calculate, we learnt that in secondary school haha. Just take into account the thickness of the wood you're using and the volume of the sub that is in the box.
Another problem was mounting the box. I had to get some L brackets and drill through some steel to mount it. Mine looks messy and I havn't had time to tidy it up ahha

Sweet as, thanks for the replys.. Its not for the ride, I gave that up when I decided to uprate the rear speakers. Stripped out the rear tray, thanks to ya all on this site, Then realised how well the factory items fit. That was a no go for me. Na, all the questions are to sort out the rumpus room.Cheers.

I built a custom box last year for behind the seat of my Toyota MR2. Getting the right sound at the right size can be a big pain in the ass! My advise to all...best off spending the money and getting a proper box for your subs unless you know exactly what your doing...lol

I hope your not running both 10' sand 15's in the one boot?
If so theres your problem.
But if you have 4 subs lying around the 2 15's will be fine you will need a fair bit of box volume 3.5 - 4 cubic foot 2 ways you can go build the box inbetween the strut towers, or fiberglass your wheel well that will give you about 4 cubes aswell.
box volume calculatorported speaker box calculatorGo to the website of your manufactuer it will show you what the reccomended box volume and tuning frequency for that speaker (tuning frequency is measered on box volume and port diameter/length)

If you happen to come across the dimensions and mesurements of that box, I'll give it a go, I got heaps of mdf and all the right tools needed right here at home.

cool, i might take some pieces of paper to sketch the dimension...
